Community Service Distinction
(Green Graduation Cord)
Working for Justice through Community Service is one of the components of the Lovejoy Graduate Profile - the expectation is that all students participate in community service during their four years at Lovejoy High School. Seniors have an opportunity to receive a cord to be worn at graduation for above and beyond service. In 2012, cord criteria was voted on and discussed with our leadership council which had student representatives from various campus organizations. The student leaders who developed the criteria were adamant this cord not be given to a student who simply completed the required hours for a club, course, or organization but it should represent exceptional effort toward community service. The student leaders chose 400 hours as the service cord requirements for LHS graduates.
Students are allowed to use any service hours that have been gained through outside organizations as well as on campus clubs, classes, and organizations over their four years at LHS. For example, a student can use Key Club, Volleyball, and National Honor Society hours to be included in the total hours for the community service cord distinction. All service hours must be documented and signed off by a supervising volunteer sponsor (other than their parent).
The Green Cord is worn at the graduation ceremony by students that have 400 or more service hours accumulated over the course of their high school years.
Service logs containing 400 or more hours may be turned into the front office by May 1st of a student's senior year. Students will maintain their service logs until the 400 hours are obtained.
