About Me

I teach beginning journalism, AV production, and leadership and I advise The Red Ledger, Lovejoy's online newspaper, and the Lovejoy News Network broadcast staff and our flagship show, Leopard Spotlight. I also coach the UIL journalism events. This is my fourth year at Lovejoy, and I'm excited to be here.

Education Background/ Qualifications for position

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with an emphasis in telecommunications from the University of Central Arkansas. I'm certified to teach journalism, speech communications and technology applications. Prior to becoming a teacher, I was a daily newspaper reporter, editor and page designer in Arkansas. I also worked for the campus newspaper and television stations in college as an editor, writer and director.

I was selected to be a fellow at the Reynolds Journalism Institute's adviser training program in Columbia, Missouri in 2011, and I am beginning my third term as regional representative for the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. I have also taught newspaper summer workshops for a number of groups including Dallas County Schools, Jostens, Balfour, and Walsworth.

I was the 2012 Lewisville High School teacher of the year and a finalist for the district teacher of the year award. I am also a recipient of TAJE's Edith Fox King award.

Previous experience

This is my 17th year to teach. I was at Lewisville High School for 11 years, advising a state and nationally-recognized print and online newspaper. Prior to that I taught yearbook and newspaper at Lancaster High School for two years.

I enjoy cooking, trivia, sports, photography, reading narrative and historical non-fiction, travel and music. I was the lead singer/harmonica player for a local blues-rock cover band for 10 years and still enjoy sitting in for jam sessions and karaoke when I get the opportunity.

Where I've Traveled and Lived

I was born and raised in Arkansas, but moved to Texas in 2002 to start my teaching career. I enjoy travel and some of my favorite places are Big Sur, Calif.; Mount Rainier National Park and the Puget Sound region in Washington; Santa Fe, NM; and the wilds of my home state.

In December of 2015, I married my wife, Faith! We began dating after a series of conversations in a local coffeehouse near the church we both attend. We share our common faith, as well as a passion for good movies, bad puns, tasty food, and beautiful scenery. In 2017, we welcomed our first child, Charlie, to the family.
