Independent Studies Course Description
 
This course, based on the exit-level Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP) for gifted and
talented students, offers a non-traditional learning experience to those students who have the ability to create innovative products or performances. Students will develop a product proposal, compile a portfolio, conduct in-depth research, be matched with a mentor from the business or professional community, and make prepared presentations about their research, product(s), or performance(s). Under the supervision of the Independent Studies teacher, students work with their mentor to create related product(s) with real-world application(s) and tangible documentation. Students will be provided with opportunities to share their presentations and receive evaluative feedback multiple times in a variety of venues with authentic audiences.

GT Independent Studies Mentorship (IS) 9122
Prerequisite: Instructor Approval................................. Tier 2.............................. 0.5-1.0 credit.............. Grade(s): 9-12 Independent Studies is offered to students with an extreme interest in a field of study outside the scope of available LHS courses. This course is the first course in the Independent Studies course sequence and is required for future Independent Studies. Students work under the supervision of the Independent Studies teacher and a mentor, and must be able to focus and work without constant supervision. Students are expected to regularly report their learning and self-evaluate their progress, maintain consistent progress on their investigations, document research and findings through a process record, and make prepared presentations about their findings and products.
 
GT Independent Studies II: Mentorship (IS/M-II) 9123
Prerequisites: Independent Studies, Instructor Approval................. Tier 2.................. 1.0 credit.......... Grade(s): 10-12
IS/M-II allows students who have completed Independent Studies to pursue an advanced level of investigation in the same/similar topic or begin a new course of study. Independent Studies is offered to students with an extreme interest in a field of study outside the scope of available LHS courses. Students work under the supervision of the Independent Studies teacher and a mentor, and must be able to focus and work without constant supervision. Students are expected to regularly report their learning and self-evaluate their progress, maintain consistent progress on their investigations, document research and findings through a process record, and make prepared presentations about their findings and products; requirements and expectations are more advanced.

Prerequisites: Independent Studies and IS/M-II, Instructor Approval..... Tier 2.......... 1.0 credit........... Grade(s): 11-12
