Project Lead the Way

The United States is currently in crisis mode in high technology and science. We are not producing enough Engineers and Scientists to fuel industry growth in many areas. Approximately eighty percent of American teenagers never consider Engineering and Science as a career. To address this problem Lovejoy ISD has implemented a program through a non-profit organization called Project Lead the Way (pltw.org) to foster interest in Engineering Disciplines at a High School Level. We now offer a four year sequence that introduces students to the Engineering Design Discipline and then takes them through specific courses, culminating in a Senior Capstone project in their chosen field. Courses are offered to expose them to college level work in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Civil Engineering and Architecture. The courses are heavily hands on to teach practical concepts through doing projects rather than book theory. In addition PLTW Engineering courses reinforce concepts learned in core Math and Science courses with hands on applications and projects. Lovejoy High School has also started a science and technology club called Extreme Engineering. Fueled with students from PLTW courses we will do projects in Robotics, Rocketry, Avionics and other technology related programs. We hosted our first VEX Robotics completion on March 7th 2009 and plan to make this an annual event in the Lovejoy community. If your child has an interest in technology or science please consider enrolling them in our program. We look forward to producing future Engineers that will reinvigorate the U.S. economy and contribute to solving critical global economic and social issues.
